What is balance, really?
In the wellness world we use the word balance a lot…
Balance of your physical body- quite literally standing on one leg
Balance of your nervous system
Balanced diet
Balance of your energy
Balance of your time
Balance between the seasons – light & dark, cold and warm temperatures
I’m sure you can think of others too- but these are what come to mind when I think of the word balance.

But what does it ACTUALLY mean?
Well, balance quite literally means: an even distribution of weight enabling someone or something to remain steady
Steady – I think that’s the key word here. It doesn’t matter what context the word balance is being used with but it’s about creating a steady outcome…. For you, your body, your health and your time.
Balance to me is a critical part of helping us to live and maintain a healthy, happy life- but it’s not something I’m always very good at maintaining. More of this in my next blog.

So, this month in classes and on socials we are going to be working on the idea of respecting our own personal balance. Whatever that needs to mean for you.
Specifically in class we will focus on three aspects of balance.
Balance of your physical body- learning to embrace the wobbles that help us to remain steady
Balance of our nervous systems- moving from sympathetic to parasympathetic to help us remain steady in life
Balance of our energy
You might be wondering what balancing your energy means though, right?
Ok let’s get into some Yoga theory for a moment.
Our bodies have an energy system – a little bit like the circulatory system, you just can’t see this one. Our energy (or in Yoga we call it Prana), moves through this system like water flowing through rivers. These channels are called Nadis and there are thousands of them in our body.
But there are three main Nadis that we work with- each moving through our 7 chakras…
Ida – calming, cool, restful energy
Pingala – fiery, action orientated, heating energy
Sushumna – the balance right in the middle, harmony
If our energy is unbalanced then we can feel unsettled, out of sorts, lethargic or anxious depending on which side is out of balance. So, our goal is to balance the Ida and Pingala energies so that we can find balance and harmony – so we can be steady.
In class this is what we will be working on.

On socials we will be talking more about balancing our time and respecting our need for action and rest in equal measures.
Little Journal question to get you going
Have a think about what Balance means to you? When you think of the word what comes up? How do you want to create more balance in your life? and what little actions can you take now to start to implement it?
Take a deep breath (or three) and then start writing the first thing that comes to your head. Let me know how you get on :)
Balance is honestly so important to find that harmony that we all want in our lives, especially at this time of year when the seasons change, nature shifts and wants us to start finding more balance with it too. So, I really hope you find this an exciting theme and I can’t wait to share it with you on the mat.
Love, Tash xx
